What is the Gospel?

The word gospel means good news. But before you can understand the good news, you need to understand the bad news.

The bad news

God is our Creator and one day, we must all give account to Him for our deeds. We have a problem here because God is holy and cannot tolerate sin, and all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Rom 3:23). As a just God, He must punish sin. The Bible tells us that the punishment for sin is death and separation from God forever in hell.

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord (Rom 6:23).

But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, And your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not hear (Isa 59:2).

Such being the case, can anything save us from the anger of a holy God on that day? Is there any hope?

The good news

Yes there is hope.

The Bible tells us that, while God is holy, He is also love. Because of His love, God sent His Son Jesus to come to earth, live a sinless life and then take the punishment of death in our stead. This was the only way sinners could be justly pardoned.

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16).
