Power of God unto Salvation
Power of God unto Salvation
We're looking again at Paul's programmatic statement in Romans 1:16-17.
The Christian life is lived in the power of the gospel, which has the righteousness of God (justification) as its source, and it goes on, through believing the gospel, to future grace in sanctification and glorification.
Last week we looked at the source of this power which is the righteousness of God revealed in the gospel.
This week we need to see that the power of the gospel is as much for the future (sanctification and glorification) as the past.
Four statements indicate this:
1. "The gospel is the power of God unto salvation..."
The term "unto salvation" has a forward trajectory in the NT indicated by its use in 2 Thess 2:13; 2 Cor 7:10; 1 Peter 1:5; Heb 9:28. Paul is saying the gospel is the power of God because it saves to the utmost, including sanctification and glorification.
2. "...for those who believe"
the word "believe" is in the present tense indicating the power of the gospel is for those who keep on believing into the future.
3. "...from faith and for faith"
Paul indicates that the gospel is not just from faith, meaning it is given to those who have faith. But it is also FOR faith, indicating that the gospel sustains and builds our faith.
4. "the righteous shall live by faith"
A quote from Hab 2:4 indicating that salvation from wrath comes to those who have faith in God.
We need to meditate on the gospel every day, for this is power that carries us through life and into glory.
