Do not make for yourself an idol

Do not make for yourself an idol
Ten Commandments | The second commandment | Ian Goodman
The sermon was on the second commandment: “You shall not make for yourself any carved image.”
What exactly is being commanded by the second commandment? Is it condemning any images of anything whatsoever, even images of people or events from the Bible? Is it only condemning images of false gods or is it also condemning images of the true God? Also what about images of Jesus, are they ok?
If we look at the relevant passages of the OT we see that it isn't simply images of false gods that are in view. For example Deut 4:15-16 “Therefore watch yourselves very carefully. Since you saw no form on the day that the Lord spoke to you at Horeb out of the midst of the fire, beware lest you act corruptly by making a carved image for yourselves, in the form of any figure, the likeness…”
It’s clear that this includes images of the true God since the rationale for not making images is that “you saw no form on the day that the Lord spoke to you.” Paul in 1 Tim 6:15-16 describes God as “he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see.”
It seems clear then that the reason no images are permitted of God is because no one has ever, or can ever see God truly in His divine nature, therefore, to make an image of Him would do nothing but diminish Him and distort Him. This seems to be the core of the issue in the second commandment. The first commandment deals with promoting other things in the place of God, the second commandment deals with demoting God to the place of other things. We do this when we make images of Him which could never accurately capture his glory.
But let's also consider why there is a longing in the human heart for images to worship. This longing is not always motivated by evil. Often it’s motivated by a desire for closeness with God. The desire to have more of God with you and before you. To be able to express more fully your love and devotion. For those in this camp there is good news, God has given us an image of Himself to worship - the person of Jesus Christ. Col 1:15 “He is the image of the invisible God.” He is God in visible form. And in bowing down to worship Him, you are in no danger of offending God but instead you honour God.
