Superiority of Christ Over the Angels
Superiority of Christ Over the Angels
The author of Hebrews wants to compare the main pillars of Judaism with Jesus who is far superior. Last week we saw the comparison with the first pillar, the prophets. Prophets Vs the revelation that came with Jesus. Today we will look at the second pillar, the angels. Angels were a big deal in Judaism. Gal 3:19. We see them mentioned time and again in the Old Testament. We also see how they are so prevelant during the days of Jesus on earth, and how they ministered to Jesus during his time of temptation, and through His ministry and even to Gethsemene.
This passage in Hebrews has seven points by which Christ is said to be superior to the angels, of which we will consider three today. [When the author quotes from the Old Testament, he does not say ‘Moses said’ etc, but says the ‘God said.’ All scripture is inspired by God, including the New Testament.] CHRIST HAS A SUPERIOR NAME Vs5: Jesus and Emmanuel, these names are superior, but here the author is referring to SON. The word angel means messenger. But Jesus is God’s SON. This is a reference to His office. A son who is born to a king, is given his due title when he takes his place on the throne. Christ was always God’s son, though for a short while he was made lower than the angels, now after His death and resurrection, He has sat down as King. CHRIST HAS A SUPERIOR DIGNITY Vs6: God commands that angels worship Him. Jesus is God, as we see so clearly in vs 8. Angels are merely ministering messengers. Vs 7. CHRIST IS SUPERIOR AS HE IS THE CREATOR WHILE THEY ARE THE CREATURES Vs10: Ps 102 speaks of God as the Creator. John 1:1-3. Who can argue that Jesus not superior to the angels? For God says so. Jesus is superior to the angels. People are sometimes impressed by angels. Christ is far superior. Angels are not to be worshipped. Christ alone is to be worshipped, and He is far superior.
