What to pray: Pray that God’s name will be glorified
"Prayer is beyond any question the highest activity of the human soul. Man is at his greatest and highest when upon his knees he comes face to face with God." Martyn Lloyd-Jones
Just like the Ten Commandments begins with God, so does the Lord’s prayer.
Today we will look at the words HALLOWED BE YOUR NAME.
Hallowed means holy, sanctified, set apart. It means to hold in honour and reverence.
Who is to be hallowed? God, our heavenly Father.
IT IS A PERSONAL PRAYER: It comes from a heart that is fallen in love with God. Such a prayer cannot be prayed by a cold heart that is set on the world and the pleasures of self.
Psalm 57 is an example of a prayer of someone who loves God with a deep love, who wants God to be honoured and glorified. And such want God to be honoured in their lives. John 15:8 When their lives bear fruit, it is obvious that they are disciples of Jesus.
That God would be exalted in their bodies and lives. Phil 1:20-21
We are not happy when those we love are insulted; we are filled with joy when God is honoured.
IT IS A PLURAL PRAYER: The chief end of the assembled church is to glorify God and enjoy Him. People who visit us, while they may not know God themselves, will know that here is a people who know and love God.
1Cor 14:23,24,25,40 God can use that to work in the hearts of unbelievers. The local church exists for the glory of God.
IT IS A PROPHETIC PRAYER: God’s people long for His name to be honoured on the earth. Psalm 57:11 That His glory be over all the earth.
Psalm 72:18-19 May the whole earth be filled with His glory. Amen and amen
Isa 11:6-9 … for the earth shall be full of the knowlege of God as the waters cover the sea.
All will be peace on that day, and all glory will be brought to God.
That is why we pray "Hallowed be Your name." We understand it dimly, as we strive to see it in our personal lives and in church life. But we know that one day we will see it in perfection.
