Jesus Anointed At Bethany

JESUS ANOINTED AT BETHANY (Mark 14:1-9)
Verse 9 says, “And truly, I say to you, wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in memory of her.” God is true to His Word, as here we are here recounting this glorious story.
We are going to lay a contrast between the conspirers against Christ and the woman with the alabaster jar.
The conspirers have access to the Scriptures, being the ones sitting in the Synagogues and offering prayers, yet at the same time, they hate the Lord. It is relevant to us in that we also have this tendency. We may be among those who hear, study, and preach the Scriptures, but hate the God of the Scriptures.
SIMILARITIES: They both are manifesting what they have going on inside of them. The one so full of hatred that they reject Him, the woman so full of love for Him that she gave up her costly alabaster jar for Him.
Now, we see what the woman did. She poured the oil over Jesus’s head. She is willing to let go of her expensive possession to gain a more worthy treasure, which is Christ.
She is harshly rebuked for it but Christ is so encouraging, running to her defense and even commending her. As Christians, we should be comforted by this story as we reflect on serving Jesus even when others see it as stupid or a waste of our time. Those are Christ’s words for us also.
Two things we should remember: *You can never over-serve Christ. A lot of things we can overdo, but when it comes to serving Christ there is no such thing as doing it too much. *You can never out-serve Jesus, as we can never do more than Him.
What a stunning Master He is for allowing us to serve Him? Jesus, the Lord of Glory, put on human flesh and allowed that human flesh to be killed in order to save us sinners. That proves how much more costly His service is.
Our service now becomes acceptable since He first provided the sacrifice that made us acceptable to the Father.
