Destined for Glory (1 Peter 1:1-5)
Many people have a low or even faulty view of salvation, often centered on their needs. However, Reformed people, believe that salvation is planned by God from eternity past for His glory!
- God has absolute sovereignty over salvation
- It is a Trinitarian work
- It points us to the Doctrines of Grace
Time and again, believers face persecution and tribulation. How do we encourage them in the Lord? What Peter did with early believers was to remind them of their salvation.
I. The origin of salvation
- The doctrine of election is found in verse 1
- We should approach this doctrine with all humility admitting that we don't know everything about it
- Election took place before the foundation of the world (from eternity past)
- Election is according to the foreknowledge of the Father (the Reformed view is that God "knew" His elect in an intimate way since the foundation of the world. His "foreknowledge" refers to God's predetermination and not to God's reactions to what He sees when He looks down the corridors of time.
- How do you know that you're one of the elect? Verse 2 says it clearly when it refers to the "sanctification" (a set apart life) of the elect.
II. The experience of salvation
- Those whom the Father elected are saved in time
- verse 3 says, "it is God who caused them to be born again" (monergistic salvation).
III. The hope of salvation
- ". . . born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead."
- The resurrection is the assurance of our hope - Christ Himself, our eternal inheritance
- God also preserves us for this inheritance (presevervation/perseverance of saints)
- Believers are kept through faith - ours is a living and saving faith
Brethren, one day, we will be raised to a perfect life - with perfect love, joy and fellowship with God.
Do you have this hope in you?
Turn to God, repent and receive eternal life - a life destined for glory!
