The Lord builds his church

The Definition of the Church Jesus promised in Matthew 16:18, “I will build my church,” a promise that remains active today. The biblical term for church, Ekklesia, never denotes a physical building but always refers to an assembly of people. It is not merely a charitable organization or a social advocacy group; rather, it is a community of those called by God.

The Sovereign Work of God True Christianity is fundamentally the activity of God. On the Day of Pentecost, 3,000 souls were “added” to the church, but they did not add themselves—the Lord added them. The growth of the church is not the result of human influence, money, or propaganda, but of God’s sovereign grace in appointing people to eternal life and gathering His “flock” from every nation.

The Means of Building: Word and Spirit God builds His church through the “double witness” of Gospel preaching and the work of the Holy Spirit.

  • The Preached Word: God has ordained the preaching of the Gospel as the ordinary means by which He calls sinners.
  • The Holy Spirit: Human eloquence is insufficient to save those “dead in trespasses”; only the Spirit can convict hearts and drive the truth into the conscience.

The Universal and Local Church The Bible describes the church in two primary ways:

  • The Universal Church: This is the “invisible” or “heavenly” church, comprising all the elect across time and space.
  • The Local Church: This is the visible gathering of believers on earth. Membership in the universal church must manifest as a commitment to a local church. Just as it makes no sense to value the “idea” of marriage without being committed to a specific spouse, a Christian should not claim to love the universal body of Christ while remaining uncommitted to a local congregation.

The Marks of a True Believer Those whom the Lord adds to His church are characterized by a devotion to the apostles’ teaching, fellowship, the breaking of bread, and prayer. A true spiritual appetite for God’s Word is a divine gift, as the Holy Spirit works in tandem with the Scriptures to guide believers into truth.

Personal Application The vital question for every individual is not whether they attend a building, but whether the Lord has added them to His church through personal faith in Christ’s death and resurrection. Salvation is found only by resting in Christ’s righteousness and repenting of sin through the strength provided by the Holy Spirit
