Sermon from Hebrews
We do not know who wrote this book and as a result we do not know the exact date. It was written by someone with excellent knowledge of the Old Testament (and Greek). This was written at a time when Jews who became Christians were persecuted and under much pressure to offer sacrifices on the altar in the temple. This book shows Jesus as superior to prophets, angels, and Moses; Jesus is the perfect Priest after the order of Melchizedek and God’s ultimate and perfect Sacrifice.
THE DIFFERENT WAYS GOD REVEALED HIMSELF The contrast between old testament and new testament is shown in terms of the unity between them, like the moon and sun, which both light up the sky. The new covenant shows the glory and reality of God’s revelation that the old testament also showed. God was still revealing Himself, but it was not fragmented anymore. In the New Testament, we have the revelation of the gospel with no obscurity.
THE DIFFERENT INSTRUMENTS THAT GOD USED TO REVEAL HIMSELF God spoke through the prophets in the Old Testament. 2Pet1:21. These men spoke as and when God spoke through them. But now He speaks through the Son. In the past, the mantle was passed on from prophet to prophet. Sometimes God spoke directly and sometimes in dreams. Sometimes they spoke to the people directly, sometimes through poetry, sometimes they performed signs. Some prophets were known by name and others were not named. The word of God came to them and left. "I am not the Light," they would all have to say with John the Baptist. But Jesus was the Creator, God personified. He is God’s cosmic sustainer of the universe. Through the prophets God gave prophecies. In Christ was the fulfillment. All that God had to say to us, He said it to us in Jesus. The miracles showed us His great power. In His death He showed His love. In His resurrection, He showed the victory over death. Christ is the last and final revelation. All scripture points to Him.
THE DIFFERENT CHARACTERS OF HIS REVELATION
In the Old Testament, God showed Himself as the holy and righteous Judge, and as Light. In the New Testament God revealed Himself to us in the Son as Love.
At a time, when pressure was put on Christians to return to the old ways, the author of Hebrews encourages them. For a believer, nothing is as encouraging as scripture.
