Marvelous Ministry Of Apollos

Marvelous Ministry Of Apollos
Acts 18:24-28
Marvelous ministry of Apollos
It takes all types of people to build the kingdom of God – men and women, introverts and extroverts, weak and strong, the ones who come and go, stay and leave, etc.
We all have need of each other in the body. (1 Cor. 12)
The last few weeks we have focused on Paul and his evangelism approach. Now we are about to look at the life of Apollos and mention quickly Aquilla and Priscilla.
Who is Apollos
I. His character – from Alexandria – a very intellectual city, scholarly city in Egypt where a lot of Jews were found
- Well-trained and eloquent
- Competent in the Scripture
- Fervent in spirit (passionate, zealous, dedicated)
- Humble in teaching (teachability)
We can learn from him and his character. We can work out our fervency by really believing that what we believe is real.
The little he knows, he boils for. (...knew only the baptism of John. Acts 18:26)
We also ought to be humble like him. He does not make an idol of his stature. He is more than willing to take the humble role of being a student.
II. His ministry
- “And when he wished to cross to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples to welcome him. When he arrived, he greatly helped those who through grace had believed...” (Acts 18:27)
- Those who believe, believe by grace and yet still need help. (Charles Spurgeon)
- It is not that grace has given you gospel to belief but it has given you to believe the gospel. (Charles Spurgeon)
- He greatly helped a church that by grace had believed. He helped water these young plants to grow and blossom.
- Getting saved is not the whole story, there is a sanctifying grace that continues on in us as long as we live
- 3 Way that Apollos helped:
a. Taught them
b. Refutes error
c. Being an example to them
He has unique combination of academic brilliance and attitude, but even more than these, the thing that helped most is his fervency in the things that he believed.
When we share the gospel, talk about the things of God, there shouldn’t be any dry eye in the room because the truth is just too good.
How can we talk about the One who substituted Himself for us, got mocked, crucified and killed for us in such light-hearted fashion?
We thank God for giving us a window to this man’s ministry where we can learn a couple of things from.
Aquilla and Priscilla:
- No less noble and useful
- Used their house for the gospel
- Shared the gospel in their house
- They used their humble possessions for the glory of God
- Sometimes the order of their names mentioned are capitalised by other sects to back their belief in women pastors. But there was no such argument made in this part of the Scripture. However, Christian women getting theologically equipped could be useful in raising new leaders like Apollos.
