The Church as it ought to be 2
We read in Acts 2v41 about how in one day, the church went from 120 to about 3120 people. This happened during the time of Pentecost when Jerusalem was teeming with people Acts 2v5-12.
Acts2v42 answers the question: Why was the church of Jesus functioning in the way that it was? Those born again were submissive to the word of God, and so were led by the Holy Spirit. The church devoted themselves to the apostles teaching. But they also acted upon this teaching. Truth unapplied is truth denied. Ephesians 4v11-12 We are given the teaching SO THAT we may be equipped for the work of ministry.
There is more to Acts 4v32-35 than debating whether they should have sold their possessions or whether we need to do that. While communism says ‘What is yours and I will take it.’ A Christian says, ‘What is mine is yours and I will share it.’ This happens only when lives are transformed, filled and indwelt by the Holy Spirit. It is not as if this comes only gradually with progressive sanctification, for these believers had not been Christians long. Phil 2v1-9 This is the mind of Jesus. Would we not like to have been members of that early church? But South City and other local churches today are the same– sinners saved by grace– with the same Lord and the same Bible. Let us pray that our church may be like the church in Jerusalem, bringing glory to God.
